Tips / Travel

For those who are planning a longer trip, it can sometimes seem impossible to fit all of the items you will need in your backpack.

However, there are ways in which you can pack for multiple climates and activities without hauling multiple bags with you. It’s all about choosing multi-function garments that will serve several purposes.

One of the best examples is a merino wool jumper, which not only keeps you warm in the evenings but acts as a perfect base layer in colder climes. Pair it with a waterproof outer shell and you’ve got a parka jacket without the bulk.

Simply add more layers in colder climes. These layers should ideally be made of thin materials like merino or synthetics, which are quick to dry and pack down small.

Another top rule is to avoid denim at all costs. While you may love your favorite jeans, they are bulky and take ages to dry. Swap them out for cotton pants.

Aside from high-quality outerwear and wool layers, you can get decent replacement clothes on the road. Don’t worry about taking dozens of pairs of socks and underwear; just invest in new ones on your way.

The same goes for footwear. Take a pair of hiking shoes lightweight enough to wear around cities, but strong enough for trails. Pack a pair of flip flops if you’re off to the beach, and perhaps a pair of lightweight espadrilles if you have the room.
