A new kind of hotel is available to outdoor enthusiasts headed to Whistler this summer — the country’s first pod hotel. Pangea combines common spaces with private pods for a hotel design both modern and cool, as well as affordable. It’s perfect for solo travelers who prefer boutique and design-centric properties.

“Pangea is unlike anything else offered in Canada, and we are thrilled to launch this concept in Whistler. Our unique pod hotel experience will speak to sophisticated, value-conscious guests unwilling to compromise on location, function, and aesthetics,” said co-founder Russell Kling. “Currently we are working obsessively to perfect the industrial design of the pods and suites, as well as the interior design of the communal spaces. We are also relentlessly focused on the significant gut renovation to the interior and complete update to the exterior to bring this prime property into the 21st century.”

“After traveling the world extensively with my husband, Russell, we knew we had to approach the ‘bathroom situation’ differently to excite the kinds of travelers we want to attract,” added co-founder Jelena Kling. “By creating these four-piece bathrooms and locating them all within the suites themselves, we add a level of privacy and convenience not commonly found in hostels or other capsule hotels.”

Pangea offers eight suites that consist of 88 sleeping pods, with at least one suite reserved for women only. Each private pod is wood-lined and includes a double bed, LED lights, charging ports, a fan, a lockable cabinet, hanging space for clothes, a storage area for luggage, mirrors and artwork. Bathrooms are separated into individually accessed bathrooms, showers, changing rooms and vanities, for a total of 60 such spaces to serve the maximum 88 guests.

Beyond the private spaces, communal rooms include The Living Room, a lounge, bar, cafe and espresso bar designed like an outdoor patio; The Rooftop Patio, Whistler’s only true rooftop bar with views of Mountain Square; and The Toy Box, a secure storage area for outdoor wear and accessories, skis, snowboards and mountain bikes.

Instead of paying per pod, like you’d pay for a guestroom, you can expect to pay per person, and if you want two people to share the double-sized pod, you’ll need to indicate that when booking. Non-paying guests are also not allowed in the pods. Families are not encouraged — in fact, you have to be 18 or older to stay at the hotel.
