When traveling by car, one of the most annoying aspects of your trip can be where to park and what to pay for parking. In large cities, especially near popular tourist attractions or during events, it can be particularly frustrating. There are a few things you can do, though, to ensure you’re getting the best parking spot possible for the most affordable price.
It’s always a good idea to reserve your parking before you reach your destination. Many hotels and event venues offer discounts for purchasing parking online and, in addition, you’ll have the peace of mind of knowing your parking spot will be waiting for you when you arrive.
If you don’t mind walking a few blocks to your destination, sites like ParkWhiz offer an interactive map to show you which parking garages and lots have discounted prices in your area. You can pay right on the site and print off a voucher to give to the attendant.
If you don’t have the time to find your parking space until right when you need it, don’t be afraid to ask the locals. Many times they can point you in the right direction, and may even know where you can park for free without getting towed. If you’re traveling for a sporting event or concert, many locals who live in nearby neighborhoods also offer spots in their driveways or yards for only a few dollars.
Of course, when parking anywhere, safety should be first and foremost. If you’re not comfortable parking in a certain area, spend the extra cash and park where you’ll feel safer, especially if you’re driving alone. If parking on a street, always park in a well-lit area. If carpooling is an option for you and your friends, that’s always safest and can also end up saving a little cash for everyone.
