Watching a video of traffic from Southeast Asia could make any novice traveler a little nervous, but once acclimated to the complete disregard for street signs, designated driving lanes and turn signals, it soon becomes second nature.
If you’re brave enough to rent a scooter or moto while visiting Southeast Asia you’ll have the freedom to explore city and countryside, but there are some important rules of the road to understand before embarking.
Always wear a helmet, or your safety and to prevent getting a ticket.
Drive slowly — even locals get nervous driving in certain areas, so stick to the sides of the road where most of the slower traffic goes.
Watch out for motos driving the wrong way. Look right, look left, look forward, look behind and repeat. Constantly.
Honk your horn when approaching alleyways to alert oncoming traffic. If you get a response, slow down and be prepared to stop.
Use cars as a shield. When stopped at an intersection, a natural cluster generally forms of other motos and cars waiting to cross, so find a car to tail and safely merge into traffic on the other side.
Use your turn signal and hands to motion any change in your direction. This alerts people behind you to not make any sudden movements because you’re a foreigner and everyone should just steer clear. Literally.
