As the second-largest city in Norway and the former capital, Bergen contains many sights and points of adventure for travelers. Thankfully, many of them are cheap or even free to explore.
Portions of what is now the Bergenhus Fortress have stood since the 1240s, the oldest and most well preserved castle in Norway. The entire structure graced the harbor with its domineering presence since the 16th century and inside you’ll find beautiful, restored towers and halls. There’s also a fantastic museum that highlights the resistance movement to the Nazi occupation.
Market Square
Market Square is the economic and cultural hub of Bergen and is the place to go to find some truly unique gifts and excellent food. It also houses the Fish Market, which got its start more than 700 hundred years ago and is still going strong.
Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf
The Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf is one of the most popular walking attractions in Bergen and contains dozens of restaurants, studios and boutique shops. The array of old wooden merchant houses and narrow alleyways take you back centuries and make for a beautiful stroll. It’s here you’ll also find the wonderful Bryggen Hanseatic Museum.
Fløyfjell
If you’re not afraid of heights hop on the tram northeast of town and ascend the peak of Fløyfjell. At 1,047 feet it provides sweeping views of the city below. You can choose to continue on another 800 feet to the Blåmann peak for even more breathtaking views.
