Driving to your relatives for the holidays can be just as stressful on your car as it is on you. Follow these tips to prep your car for that long winter drive and avoid getting stranded on the road.
Read Your Gadgets
Winter is hard on batteries so check that your charging system is good condition. You’ll also want to make sure your lights, wipers, defrosters, heaters, brakes and exhaust system are working properly.
Top Off The Vital Fluids
Your cooling system should be cleaned, flushed and refilled every two years, and there’s no better time to do it than before winter comes. Also be sure to change the oil at recommended intervals; if you have an older car in sub-zero temperatures, consider a winter-grade oil with a lower viscosity.
Pack Your Gear
Some people like to keep sand bags in their trunks by each tire, especially for cars with rear-wheel drive. The added weight provides more traction for the rear wheels, and you’re prepared in case you get stuck. A shovel and ice scraper will also come in handy when caught in a snowstorm.
Prepare For The Worst
It’s a good idea to pack an emergency kit in case you are stranded on the road. Be sure to carry flares, a flashlight, candles, matches and a battery pack for your phone.
