Restaurant portion sizes are out of control and often lead to food waste or overconsumption. Next time you go out, save your money and your waistline by bringing your own reusable takeout containers.

Many colleges are adopting the reusable container trend, but you don’t have to live in a dorm to make this eco-friendly switch. Some colleges even wash the containers for students, as part of the school’s dining hall program. While restaurants won’t go that far, there are still plenty of reasons why you should capitalize on this trend.

This eco-friendly move is part of a campaign called Takeout Without, which encourages people to embrace their leftovers instead of consigning them to the landfill. Similarly, you can reduce food waste by tailoring your order. If you know you aren’t going to eat the bread that comes with your soup, ask the waiter to leave it off, instead of getting it delivered to your table.

Some restaurants and cafes also offer discounts when you bring your own mug. Starbucks gives customers a 10-cent discount when they choose to use their own cup.

Most takeout containers are made of disposable Styrofoam or plastic and immediately end up in the landfill. By bringing your own containers, you prevent food waste and reduce the amount of trash that ends up in landfills. Choose insulated containers or thermoses to keep food fresh and safe. Bon appetite and happy leftovers!
