Destinations / North America

Every avid traveler knows Captain C.B. “Sully” Sullenberger, the heroic pilot who landed a US Airways aircraft in the Hudson River in 2009. However, a museum in North Carolina now honors Sullenberger in a new way, with the renaming of Carolinas Aviation Museum. Moving forward, the museum will be known as Sullenberger Aviation Museum. The name change also comes with a location change, as the museum plans a new facility next to Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

The museum already houses the US Airways Flight 1549 aircraft Sullenberger landed on the Hudson River as part of an exhibit that debuted in 2011. In addition, the museum exhibits other historic aircraft and provides STEM education to the surrounding region. The new location will be 105,000 square feet and offer even more experiences and interactive exhibits, incorporating flight simulators and RFID storytelling features.

“The Sullenberger Aviation Museum will be the premier aviation museum of the Southeast and will allow visitors to experience the past, present and future of aviation like never before,” said Marc Oken, board chair, Sullenberger Aviation Museum. “This reimagined museum will serve as a vital resource to help students and adults connect to careers in STEM-based industries all while showcasing the power and potential of the human imagination through the wonder of flight and transforming lives and economic vitality in the Carolinas.”

The new museum location is set to open by the end of 2023.
