Wisconsin is home to the butter burger, a deliciously messy addition to the United States’ burger lexicon. While there are versions of the butter burger all over the state of Wisconsin that incorporate butter into some aspect of the burger — and Wisconsin has fantastic butter — there is a go-to when it comes to multiple locations and opportunities.
Fifteen-year-old Charlie Nagren is credited with selling the first butter burger at the Wisconsin State Fair in 1895 with the chant of, “Hamburger, hamburger, hamburger hot, with an onion in the middle and a pickle on top, makes your lips go flippity flop, come on over, try an order, fried in butter, listen to it sputter.”
Ninety-nine years later in Sauk City, Wisc., Craig and Lea Culver opened the first Culver’s and trademarked the name. There are now dozens of locations across the state and no location ever disappoints. They trademarked the name ButterBurger and have been going strong since. While some bars spare no butter and perhaps even use too much, Culver’s burgers are not “fried, slathered, steeped, basted, drenched or marinated and topped with butter.” Rather they are simply served on a lightly toasted buttered bun and offer many varieties.
