If you want to experience a quintessential country pub, look no further than the Running Horses.
It’s found in Mickleham, near the town of Dorking in Surrey. You might be just 40 minutes from London on the train, but it feels like you’ve stumbled into the kind of rolling hills that made poets go gaga for centuries.
A lot of the clientele are walkers taking a rest from climbing nearby Box Hill, so you can expect muddy boots left in front of the fire. If you want to eat in the dining room, you’re obliged to take them off.
Settle in to one of the cozy booth tables and get stuck in to a club sandwich, sirloin steak, beer-battered haddock or one of the many other pub favorites on the menu. As you’d expect there is a full bar to choose from, with plenty of craft beers as well as a good selection of wine.
Mains hover around $22 on average, so it’s not the cheapest pub in Surrey. However, it is one of the most atmospheric, and the food is sublime. Stick around for a few drinks afterwards to swap stories with the locals, and you might even have to book one of the upstairs rooms to recover.
