Tips / Travel

Money makes the world go ‘round, and it’s also the necessary evil required to travel around the world. When flight prices are added to hotel rates, rental car fees and souvenir allowances, traveling can seem like a distant dream only millionaires can afford. Rather than giving up on hopes to explore the world, keep the following money hacks in mind when planning a reasonably priced trip.

When it comes to booking transportation, the more flexible you can be with your travel dates, the better. Consider a long weekend but from Wednesday to Saturday instead of the standard Thursday-to-Sunday itinerary. Avoid reserving flights on Friday nights, as prices tend to be the highest on this day during the week. For flights to larger cities, search for flights that land at the airport farther from the city center where discount airlines land for less-expensive fares. Finally, don’t always assume round-trip tickets are the cheaper option. Browse one-way flights, as well, to compare prices, especially when planning a multi-city getaway.

Regarding accommodation, there’s no reason to turn your nose up at less-expensive hostels. Boutique hostels have popped up around the world, offering rooms for less money but with a touch of personalization and service you won’t find at hotels.

Once settled in your new location, forego the souvenir shops. Instead of loading up on tangible memories, take photos and print them at home for authentic wall art. To sample the local food (as all travelers should do), visit restaurants at lunchtime when most will have prix-fixe menus heaps cheaper than the dinner prices. Once these tips are implemented, a fair-fared getaway won’t seem so impossible.
