How to Score a Free Flight Upgrade

When boarding a plane, economy-class passengers are often faced with a unique walk of shame, passing first- and business-class passengers on the way to the cheaper, cramped seats at the back of the plane. Not all economy passengers know, however, that the possibility of upgrading to a nicer, roomier seat (for free) are just within their grasp. If you’re curious as to whether you can score a free seat upgrade, ask yourself the following questions.

Where/when are you flying? If you’re booked along a popular business route, say from New York to Chicago, you may not have many opportunities for an upgrade as there are likely fewer business seats available. With regards to timing, being the first passenger in line or the last passenger to check in may be the two best positions for an upgrade depending on availability.

What are you wearing? In an effort to convey a first class that exudes luxury and exclusivity, airlines may be more apt to allow you into these prized seats if you’re dressed nicely.

Are you a rewards member? Signing up for an airline’s rewards program is a no-brainer way to stay informed of empty seats, flight sales and special discounts for members. Membership may also give you an advantage if one empty first-class seat comes down to you and another passenger who is not a member.

Is the flight full? If the economy seats on board are full, airlines may choose to reward frequent travelers with a complimentary upgrade on a different flight.
