Tips / Safety

Many people forget to secure their homes prior to leaving on a trip. In some cases, this results in electrical fires, water damage or burglaries. Follow these simple guidelines to avoid worrying about your home while away.

Either leave your car in the driveway or ask a neighbor to park their car there to create the appearance you’re home. Mail oozing out of the mailbox obviously indicates you’re out of town. Therefore, have the post office hold the mail until you return. If you’re traveling for extended periods of time, have someone maintain the yard.

Put your lights and TVs on timers to create the impression you’re inside. Also, equip the exterior lights to turn on with motion detectors. To avoid possible electrical issues, unplug everything in the house excluding the refrigerator and anything on a timer. Turn off the main water valve to the house. Set the A/C to the appropriate temperature.

Ask a neighbor you trust to keep an eye on your home. If you don’t trust your neighbors, then ask a friend or family member to drive by and check on the house while you’re away. Even if you do not own a dog, place a “Beware of Dog” sign in the window. Studies show these signs decrease burglaries because many criminals fear dogs. If you don’t have an alarm system, get one.

Double check every door and window is locked. Regardless of if you’ll be away, there should always be a metal or wooden pole on the floor securing any sliding glass doors. Do not hide a key outside unless it’s in a lockbox. Otherwise, entrust a family member with a key. Secure any valuables in a safe or safety deposit box.

These precautions will protect your home and valuables in your absence.
