Tips / Safety

Couch surfing is one of the most affordable ways to travel on a budget, especially for backpackers. It’s also one of the most dangerous. Be sure to do your homework before trusting someone who lets you sleep in their home.

Are They Creepy?

Hopefully anyone traveling on their own has good instincts. Are yours telling you your potential host is giving off some seriously sketchy vibes? If so, look for accommodations elsewhere unless you want to wake up with him hovering over you in the middle of the night.

How’s the Neighborhood?

Free doesn’t always mean good. If your new foreign friend lives in the ghetto, there’s a good chance you’re going to get robbed when sleeping on his couch. He might be great, but some of the characters in his neighborhood might pop in for a surprise break-in during the night.

No Reviews

If you’re seeking out couches online, you should do so on a reputable site where others are able to leave reviews. If you notice your potential host doesn’t have reviews that should send up a red flag. If they have any negative reviews, run the other way.

Females Only

If you’re a woman traveling and see posts from men who want only women couch surfers, you can bet he’s hoping for more than friendly conversation. Just don’t do it.
