Times Square. Watching the ball drop. New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Whatever phrase you use, many people associate New Year’s Eve with New York City. If you plan to visit New York City to ring in the New Year, follow our tips for having the best New Year’s Eve ever.

For an up-close view of the famous ball drop, plan to arrive in Times Square as early in the day as possible. Street closures begin midafternoon and many spots with the best vantage points are taken by about 3 p.m. Musical performances take place throughout the day, so you’ll be entertained while waiting for the main event. Make sure to hydrate and eat throughout the day.

If you want to avoid the crowds in Times Square, but still want to remain close to the action, consider grabbing dinner in nearby Hell’s Kitchen. This neighborhood is a few blocks from Times Square and is home to many great restaurants.

Many New York City hotels offer great New Year’s Eve deals. The New York Marriot Marquis has a New Year’s Eve special; Hyatt Times Square New York hosts a party with spectacular views on their rooftop lounge; and Yotel New York features a New Year’s party with a five-hour open bar.

New Year’s Eve at Times Square is New York City’s biggest event. Be extra cautious of your surroundings and be sure to say something if you see something suspicious.
