Stay Safe in Cuba

Under the socialist governments of the Castro brothers, Cuba gained a reputation as a safe place to travel.

While in other Latin American or Caribbean destinations you may have to be wary about violent crime, Cuba is an obvious exception. Children playing in the streets late at night are testament to the safety of the country, even in the capital of Havana.

However, that is not to say crime does not exist. While you are unlikely to encounter guns or knives during your trip, there are a large number of scams travelers can fall victim to.

Given the existence of a dual currency system, tourists are often short changed by vendors looking to make an easy buck. It is wise to check your change before you leave the premises.

One of the most popular purchases among tourists is the famous Cuban cigars. However, a cottage industry in fake cigars has flourished as the number of tourists increases, with many street hustlers claiming to have a cousin who works in the factory that can get discount smokes. Never buy cigars on the street in Cuba, as they are generally of lower quality or filled with substances such as banana leaves.

The same can be said of other popular purchases such as bottles of rum, which are also easily faked.

As with most countries, the hectic pace of life in the capital city can make it easier to fall prey to confidence tricks and sleight of hand. It pays to keep a close eye on valuables in popular tourist areas and double check prices before ordering drinks or food.

In general, Cuba is a safe place to travel, but that does not mean you should let your guard down.
