Tailgating is a fall activity everyone enjoys, whether you’re a hardcore football fan or just a passive onlooker. Hosting your own tailgating experience isn’t difficult and, with a little bit of planning and creativity, you can pull off a game day event your friends will love.

First things first — scope out your spot. You want to make sure you’re somewhere not too crowded, but not too far from all the action either. Close proximity to both the stadium and the bathrooms are a must. After you’ve found your perfect spot, make sure to arrive early enough to claim it!

Tailgating décor is simple, but important all the same. A canopy in team colors is a must-have, particularly for sunny day games. Ample seating for your guests in the form of camping chairs is easy enough. Team-themed signs, streamers, plates and napkins can be picked up for a few dollars and really help to set the stage.

Keep your guests entertained by bringing a few footballs to toss around, as well as some outdoor speakers for a game day playlist and face paint in team colors. If your set-up allows for it, an extra television in a safe place can allow guests to keep up on the other games of the day.

Of course, the most important part of any tailgate is the menu. Go for classic game day foods that can be grilled, thrown in a crockpot or prepared at home beforehand. Burgers, hotdogs, brats, chili, nachos, barbecue and wings are all great ways to go. Be sure to pick up a folding table with ample room for the buffet. Bring a wide selection of soft drinks, beers, liquors and mixers, with one cooler designated as kid-friendly and the other as adults-only.
