As an increasing number of people work online, a number of start-ups are offering co-working spaces designed to promote cooperation and reduce the isolation sometimes suffered by freelancers.
One such project is Surf Office, founded by Slovakian Peter Fabor after he grew frustrated by his work-life balance. Fabor moved to the Canary Islands in order to combine his passion for surfing with his work life.
Not only did he realize productivity improved when he spent his free time doing something he loved, he saw that connecting like-minded professionals in such an environment could serve as a creative laboratory.
After setting up the first Surf Office in Gran Canaria, the company now has additional locations in Lisbon, Portugal, and Santa Cruz, California. For the customer, the idea is simple: Reserve and pay for your room just like you would with a normal hotel, but safe in the knowledge the space and the other guests will be perfectly suited to boosting your creativity.
Work spaces are provided, along with fast, reliable Internet connections, and activities are organized both to encourage guests to disconnect from their work and form new connections with fellow freelancers to potentially spark new projects. Each location offers printers, projectors and LCD displays to maximize work time, while private rooms and housekeeping services are provided to allow you to maintain your focus.
Surf Office is a great way to disconnect from your work while still having the right tools at hand should you be struck by a moment of inspiration.
