Don’t just “do it for the ‘gram” or do. No matter the motivation behind your Instagram habit, these tips will make your photos stand out from the crowd.
First, think about framing. What do you want to take a picture of? Are you showing off a towering birthday cake or a view from your hotel room? Focus on the most important part and have other items in the background for context. For example, focus on the cake and position wine glasses behind it.
Think about lighting. Yes, filters are fun but they can’t fix everything. If your photo is either over -or underexposed you lose image quality and get digital noise (or “snow”). This is most common when you’re trying to ‘gram in a dark place or against the sun. Subtle tricks like placing food under a light or positioning subjects near a window can make a world of difference.
Finally, choose the right filter. We have a love/hate affinity for Instagram filters. Choosing the right one can make your image pop, but the wrong one can make for an unappealing photo. Don’t settle on the first filter you skim through, try on a few before you have that aha-moment.
Remember the most important thing is the memory, not the photo. Happy Instagramming!
