Sustainable travel is all the rage right now, and considering travel and tourism contribute considerably to global carbon emissions, it’s easy to get behind this trend. But where does sustainable travel begin and how can you make sure your travel experience is as eco-friendly as possible? Here are a few hints for getting started.
Pack a reusable water bottle. Some seasoned travelers already do this in an effort to save money on expensive airport water bottles and to stay hydrated on long, dry flights. Join the anti-plastic movement and invest in a portable, reusable, BPA-free water bottle you can fill up wherever water is drinkable.
Inform yourself in advance. Searching for a sustainable hotel or hostel? Check out the website to see if they participate in any green initiatives. If the site doesn’t display any clear information, send them a message or call them. Go one step further by asking them for proof of certification as a “green” property.
Use mass transit. If you’re flying, try to book a direct flight. Better yet, if you can drive to your destination, opt for the road. Once you arrive, rely on mass transportation to get around or (even better) walk or bike to get from sight to sight.
Book an ecotourism vacation. Combine your love of the environment and travel by reserving a spot on a green getaway. Such adventures include staying on a farm with a local family or taking care of animals on a wildlife reserve, leaving the smallest footprint possible.
