Despite devastating floods in 2015, Tamil Nadu is the most popular Indian state among foreign tourists, according to data published by India’s Ministry of Tourism last month.
Tamil Nadu contributed almost 20 percent of total foreign visits to India last year. In 2015, the country saw 23 million foreign travelers, up from 22 million in 2014 — a 4.4 percent jump. The most visited states (with number of visits in millions) for 2015 were Tamil Nadu (4.68), Maharashtra (4.41), Uttar Pradesh (3.1), Delhi (2.38), West Bengal (1.49), Rajasthan (1.48), Kerala (0.98), Bihar (0.92), Karnataka (0.64) and Goa (0.54).
Meanwhile, some states saw a decline in their numbers. Unrest in Jammu and Kashmir meant visitor numbers dropped 32 percent from 2014 to 2015. Other states with declining tourism numbers last year were Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan and Sikkim.
Most foreign visitors flock to India’s western states, while the country’s northeastern states are seeing a steady decline in the number of foreign tourists.
