If the dark doesn’t scare you and you’ve always wondered what it must’ve been like to search for gold back in the Old West, a mine tour might be up your alley.
The Old Hundred Gold Mine Tour takes you deep into Galena Mountain, 13,000 feet to be exact, in the heart of popular mining town Silverton, Colo. The tour itself lasts an hour and you’ll be able to explore the depths of the mine while discovering actual mining equipment and watching it in action.
You’ll wind your way through dark, barely lit tunnels while you ride along on a vintage, electric mine train. Along the way you’ll see miners in action who’ll demonstrate how air-powered drills, slushers and mucking machines were used to dig for gold back in the 1930s.
The walls are lined with crystals and rocks uncovered by the powerful blasts and, outside the mine, you’ll also get to see the Old Hundred Boarding House situated on a sheer cliff 200 feet above the mine where workers used to live.
The trip includes a picnic (outside the mine) and an opportunity to pan for real silver, copper and gold at the end of the tour.
Reservations for this unique trip aren’t required, and the mine is easily accessible by car or shuttle from the town of Silverton.
Tickets are $18.95 for adults and $9.95 for kids aged 5–12.
