We’ve all heard of it by now: The “tourist tax” is a policy many countries across the world are implementing to combat factors like overcrowding and climate change. Unfortunately, for travelers, these taxes mean extra charges just to visit a city.
So, what countries charge you to visit, and what are the taxes for?
- Venice, Italy: The city enforces a daily visitor tax for non-hotel guests in the city at €5 per person per day.
- Balearic Islands, Spain: These islands have a sustainable tourism tax, charging visitors €1–4 per night.
- Amsterdam, Netherlands: Expect to pay a hotel and air tax of 7 percent the price of a hotel room, plus €3 per night.
- Paris, France: The City of Love has its own tourist tax of €1–5 per night.
- Reykjavik, Iceland: Iceland’s capital charges tourists €2–4 per night.
- Vienna, Austria: If you’re staying overnight here, you’ll be charged an additional 3.2 percent of your room rate for tourism promotion and maintenance.
- Barcelona, Spain: A tourism tax and cruise supplement means both overnight visitors and cruisers docking in the city could pay €2.75-plus per night and €3-plus for cruisers.
- Ljubljana, Slovenia: This city has a “clear air” initiative, charging overnight travelers about €2 per night.
- Malta: To protect the environment, Malta charges tourists €0.50 per night for a max of €5.
- Rome, Italy: Overnight guests should expect to pay €3–7 per night depending on accommodation category.
- Cologne and Berlin, Germany: Both cities have a city or culture tax of 5 percent the room rate for overnight guests.
- Lisbon and Porto, Portugal: Like Germany, Portugal has two cities enforcing a tourism tax. Overnight travelers must pay €2 per night.
- Santorini, Greece: Suffering from overcrowding, Santorini has a stayover tax of between €0.50 and €4 per night.
- Dubrovnik, Croatia: To support general tourist infrastructure, this tax charges overnight visitors about €1.50 per night.
- Zermatt, Switzerland: This destination charges you to basically breathe the air. It’ll set you back about €2.40–4.10.
