Tips / Destination

The German city of Düsseldorf has plenty to offer visitors who come to this wealthy corner of the country.

Düsseldorf does not normally feature on the list of great European cities to visit, but it should. An historic commercial city which hugs the banks of the mighty Rhine River, Düsseldorf is a hot spot for art and fashion.

Head to the Altstadt (Old Town) to get a taste of how the city was in times past, with its lanes full of coffee shops and bars. This is also a great spot to have a look over the Rhine, and perhaps take a boat trip up the river.

On the edge of the Old Town are some of the most famous art venues in Düsseldorf, like the Kunsthalle. After a spot of culture, take a ramble along the Konigsallee, which rivals the grand shopping boulevards of Europe for its number and variety of high-end designer boutiques.

Even if you aren’t in the market for anything from Chanel, Dior or Kenzo, it makes for great people watching. Take a seat and watch the world go by at the famous Café Heinemann pastry shop on Martin-Luther-Platz.

Düsseldorf has a large Japanese population, and plenty of Japanese restaurants and cafes to match. Among the best is Takumi, which opened a second branch due to its immense popularity.

Once you’ve had a long day sightseeing, reward yourself with a beer at the Zum Schlussel brewery. The Original Schlussel is the only beer made here, right on site, and it follows a 170-year-old recipe. Perfect for relaxing after a long day pounding the streets of this fascinating city.
