Tips / Travel

Money is tight — especially for college students. Spring break doesn’t help as hotels, airfare, food, drinks, entertainment and other miscellaneous fees can add up. Just because you’re living on a budget doesn’t mean you need to spend break at home.

Going to Cancun doesn’t have to break the bank. If you’re smart about saving money, you can have a great trip and come home with leftover money. Take time to plan your trip, budget your finances and cut back on unnecessary spending during the months leading up to the trip. Here are some points to consider before opening your wallet before and after spring break.

Book the Hotel Directly

Booking directly means you’re cutting out the middle-man fee. If you book early enough, chances are you’ll get a bigger discount. The longer you wait, the more the rate goes up.

Budget

Take a realistic look at your finances to determine how much you can spend on spring break, and the destination that best suits you. When you consider a budget, it’s important to prepare for the unexpected, so assume everything will cost 10 percent more than expected. You will end up with a little bit of extra cash to spend and won’t run short when paying the bills.

Road Trip

Driving to your destination may, in fact, be cheaper than flying. If you’re traveling with friends, have them pitch in for gas, making it less expensive for you. You can even plan out the route with fun stops along the way.

Pack Everything Needed

If you have to purchase something once you reach your destination, chances are it’ll be more expensive. Make sure you don’t forget sunglasses, clothes, suntan lotion, a bathing suit and other necessary items.

Bring Your Student ID

Carrying your student ID can be advantageous. Many clubs, restaurants and attractions will give discounts to students as they recognize you’re traveling on a budget.

Keep Food Costs in Check

Meals out can be one of the largest and most underestimated expenses on a multiday vacation. Stop by a grocery store and pick up food for breakfast, lunch and snacks to cut down on overpriced meals at overcrowded restaurants.

Discount Card Programs

In addition to coupon-filled brochures found in hotels and visitor centers, many spring break destinations offer students a discount party pass which includes happy hour specials and discounts at stores and restaurants.
