Traveling while gay is, unfortunately, still risky business in many countries throughout the world. Things are getting better for those of us in the LGBT community, but that doesn’t mean we can let our rainbow flags fly free everywhere we go. Here are some things to keep in mind when you’re unsure of the local climate when it comes to gay rights.
Stay in the Closet
This sounds harsh, but when the option is returning briefly to the closet or heading to jail, sometimes the best thing you can do is close that door. If you’re traveling in a hostile country for a few days, just pretend you’re happily single and avoid topics about sex and relationships when possible.
Don’t Argue Politics
It’s hard not to be opinionated when people’s basic human rights are on the line, but an American in a foreign country has no clout. It’s best not to incite anger when you have no one around that can cover your back, so avoid discussing gay rights and politics in general.
Be Respectful
Whether due to religious scripture or just old-fashioned world views, some folks just aren’t ready to accept homosexuality. It might not be right, but when you step into someone else’s home, you still need to be respectful of their beliefs. Don’t chide them for disagreeing with you, as long as they aren’t trying to harm you.
Be Cautious with Affection
In countries where being gay is illegal, expressing affection for your partner can get you in serious trouble. Avoid loud sex in hotel rooms, making out in bars and other forms of PDA.
Just Don’t Do It
Honestly, sometimes it’s just best to avoid a horrible situation altogether. In the fight for gay rights around the world, one of the best weapons is to hit them where it hurts: their wallets. Don’t travel to hostile countries until they change their ways, especially if they rely on tourism to survive.
