It’s not as simple as dropping your car off and picking it up again. For long-term parking, follow these tips to make it as smooth as possible.
Wash and Cover It
If you’re going to be away for more than a few weeks, you might want to give it a quick wash so stains and bird droppings don’t damage the paint. Afterward, you can protect it with a car cover, especially if you’re parking in an outdoor lot. Also, don’t be tempted to cancel your insurance for a month or two. A gap in coverage could cost you more in the long run.
Check the Vitals
Used engine oil could contaminate and damage the engine, so get an oil change if you’re gone for more than 30 days. Topping off the gas is good for keeping moisture out of the fuel tank, but a fuel stabilizer will also keep your engine clean from gum and rust.
Charge the Battery
An unused battery will lose its charge, and you can’t tell someone to run the engine every once in a while at the airport. Disconnecting the negative cable solves this problem, but your car’s computer settings might be reset. A trickle charger is the better option, feeding just a little bit of juice to your battery so it doesn’t fade away.
Maintain the Tires
Idle tires, especially in cold weather can develop flat spots after a while. Driving once in a while will get rid of them, but you can use jack stands if that isn’t an option. It isn’t recommended you use your parking brake either. They’re fine for short periods of time, but if the brake pads are continuously touching the rotors, they might fuse and be rendered useless. Instead use a chock to keep your car still.
Pick the Site
Airports will have the most convenient economy lots, but they will probably be more expensive than off-site lots. Off-Site tends to get better reviews for service as well, with staff there to park your car and help with luggage before taking a shuttle to the airport.
