While hitchhiking is not as popular as it once was (nor is it recommended by Trazee Travel), many travelers still believe it is the only real way to see the real United States. Accepting rides from strangers comes with potential risks and dangerous, so properly prepare to try and avoid these types of situations.
Legality
Hitchhiking is banned in New York, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Utah and Wyoming.
Travel with a Buddy
While it is not always feasible to travel in a pair or group, having others on your side can significantly decrease the chance of your host driver acting violently.
Talk to the Driver Before you Enter
Not only is this a good way to make a favorable first impression, but by talking to the driver before sitting down, you can gauge his personality and temperament. Perhaps he is upset or drunk — in either case, you might consider looking for another ride.
Keep Positive
Getting into an argument with the driver of the vehicle is always a bad idea. Try to avoid controversial subjects like religion, politics and social issues if you think it might lead to a dispute. Keep in mind, you’re a guest in this person’s vehicle — treat the driver and his property with respect.
Remember: You Don’t Have to Accept the Ride
While saying “no thanks” to someone’s offer might appear as rude, it is imperative to do so if you feel as if your safely might be in danger.
