Tips / Destination

Although most European countries are exceedingly well connected by rail, bus and air, the relatively new Balkan nation of Montenegro is still playing catch-up in terms of modern-day infrastructure. This leaves travelers with one option if they really want to explore the natural side of the scenic country: Rent a car. Here are a few car rental tips for traversing the diverse terrain.

Insurance

While many car rental agreements include some sort of basic insurance coverage, it wouldn’t hurt to tack on additional coverage. Montenegro roads can be rocky, winding and unpredictable, so a bit of extra security could come in handy in worst-case scenarios.

Make a Plan and Share It

Some road travel among the Balkan countries requires special documentation when crossing borders. For example, if you rent a car in Croatia but plan to travel to Montenegro during your visit, you’ll need to notify the car rental agency to obtain a green paper that will allow you to cross the border without any suspicion.

Choose Your Transmission Wisely

Montenegro is hilly, and the road shapes can change on a dime. As most Americans are not as accustomed to driving using manual transmission, it may be a smarter option to pay a bit more and rent a car with automatic transmission, especially for those curvy mountain roads.
