Tips / Destination

The small nation of Belize is a fascinating mixture of Caribbean and Central American cultures with plenty to see and do.

Perhaps the best tip to take on board is to get out of dirty and dangerous Belize City as soon as you can. With so many natural wonders to explore, there’s no need to waste time in the city.

If you want to visit the famous keys, make sure you choose the right one for your budget. Caye Caulker is best for backpackers, while Ambergris Caye attracts more of a jet set crowd.

Make sure you plan on diving or snorkeling, both among the best in the world in Belize. It’s not too expensive to go diving and the reef is incredible. You can also dive the famous Blue Hole if you have some experience.

Conveniently for U.S. travelers, the U.S. dollar is accepted throughout the country. The Belizean dollar is fixed two-to-one to the greenback, so conversions are also easy. Add the fact that English is the official language and Belize starts to look like an ideal destination.

Remember to get away from the sea to explore the lush inland jungle. There are Mayan ruins and incredible wildlife you can visit if you don’t feel like sunbathing.

If you are traveling on overland to Mexico or Guatemala it’s worth remembering there is a $20 exit fee.
