Paramaribo is the capital of Suriname and though not exactly on many traveler’s radar, it’s got some pretty fascinating places to visit within its borders.
Fort Zeelandia
This former Dutch fortress was built to protect the nearby trading outpost against foreign invaders. Today it stands as a memorial to local Ottoman history, chronicling the birth and death life cycles of the past. The museum contains artifacts from bygone eras and is a wonderful look into local history.
Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral
To truly understand a culture you have to take into account the religious history and there’s no better place to do so in Paramaribo than the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral. Home to some of the area’s most awe-inspiring architecture, this cathedral is open to the public most days and a must-see while in town.
Waterkant
Waterkant is a stretch of buildings along the Suriname River with loads of local restaurants and shops to explore. It’s also home to a UNESCO World Heritage site full of some of the most well-preserved homes in Paramaribo, dating back centuries. It’s a wonderful place to spend an afternoon relaxing.
Presidential Palace
The Presidential Palace, located on Independence Square, is one of the most well-kept buildings in all of Paramaribo. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and the building itself awe-inspiring. The palace is now open to the public as it’s no longer the actual residence of royalty, so take advantage of it and have a look around.
Peperpot Nature Park
Check out the Peperpot Nature Park for a little nature within city limits. Here you can walk around and explore the local wildlife while also taking a peak inside the educational center and museum. There’s also a souvenir shop and plenty of animals around that are only found in Suriname.
