Berlin is now famous for its youth culture, as well as being home to thousands of watering holes. Here are five of the best you should visit next time you’re in town.
Die Weinerei
It’s pay what you like at this atmospheric wine bar, with an initial charge of €2 for glass rental, granting visitors the opportunity to drink as much as they like. Simply leave whatever you think is appropriate in the tip jar on the way out.
Bei Schlawinchen
If you like drinking early, or late, or anytime in between, this 24-hour spot in Kreuzberg will be ready to welcome you. The clientele is mixed, with interesting characters throughout the day, and the prices are cheap.
Das Hotel
It looks dilapidated, but it’s all part of the Berliner charm at this arty hangout. Think beer, absinthe and old furniture to go with a friendly atmosphere.
Prater Garten
As the oldest beer garden in Berlin, Prater Garten has seen a few drinking sessions. First opened in 1837, it’s a great spot to sit on a sunny afternoon. There are seats inside for when the weather is bad, and you can get traditional German meals like goulash to go with your beer.
Bar Tausend
If you want to treat yourself, head to this chic cocktail bar in Mitte. It makes a change from the grunge-inspired aesthetic of many other nightspots, with a strict door policy and an elegant interior.
