Millions of travelers flock to Cambodia each year to marvel in the millennia-old Angkor temples in the northern town of Siem Reap, but few make it several hours south to the coast of Cambodia as most tend to favor the beaches of neighbors Thailand or Vietnam. The Cambodian coast boasts beaches and islands that are just as breathtaking and not nearly as crowded. Here are just a few to consider when visiting Cambodia.
Otres Beach
Located a few miles east of the popular backpacker beach town of Sihanoukville, Otres is more relaxed and rife with guesthouses and beach huts to rent.
Koh Rong Samloem
Only 5.5 miles long and 2.4 miles wide, this island is everything a remote tropical getaway should be: empty beaches, white sands and crystal-clear blue waters. Hire a long boat to take you around the circumference of the island, or opt to hike it yourself. Beware of the wild boars that inhabit the island.
Located a 45-minute ferry ride from the mainland, this “resort” was created by expatriates who wanted to offer an off-the-grid experience. Rates at the resort start at $30 and include sleeping quarters, a full bar and a restaurant.
Rabbit Island
Travel from Kep by ferry to this palm tree-lined island to spend afternoons lazing in hammocks, followed by a fresh seafood dinner at the local fish shacks.
Victory Beach
Catch a stunning sunset from this quieter beach area where seafood shacks rest on the northern end, allowing the rest of the beach to be enjoyed by sunbathers and nappers.
