There is no shortage of classic culinary experiences in New York City, from bodega breakfast sandwiches to Michelin-starred meals. Sometimes all you need is a sweet and frosty pick-me-up. Check out our list of ice cream shops in New York City when you’re hungry for a cool treat.
10Below Ice Cream
10Below Ice Cream utilizes a Thai technique of pouring cream on top of a cold plate and scooping with a spatula into rolls. The unique presentation still tastes as rich and creamy as a standard scoop. Flavors include Key Lime Pie, Monkey Business, Cookie Monster and I Love You a Latte. There are locations in Chinatown and Flushing.
Big Gay Ice Cream Shop
Big Gay Ice Cream began as an ice cream truck before the Manhattan storefront opened in 2011. Traditional soft serve gets a twist with fun flavors and toppings. Try the Bea Arthur, with vanilla ice cream, dulce de leche and crushed ‘nilla wafers. The quirky shop recently expanded to Philadelphia.
Black Tap NYC
For the ultimate in over-the-top decadence, check out the Instagramable Black Tap. Skip the restaurant’s menu of burgers, fries and sandwiches and opt for a milkshake instead. Toppings range from an entire cupcake to rock candy sticks to churros to a candy apple. Only for the serious sweet tooth.
Emack & Bolio’s
While Emack & Bolio’s isn’t exclusive to New York City, the outrageous cones and flavors make this shop popular among locals and tourists. With two locations in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn, stop in for fun flavors like grasshopper pie, S’mOreo and bananas foster.
Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream
This standard-looking ice cream parlor is anything but. With a retro feel, the shop dishes out a mix of classic (chocolate, coffee) and unusual (strawberry durian, banana curry) flavors. Ice cream cakes and sandwiches are also available.
