Top 5 / North America

Kauai is blessed with an abundance of superb beaches, from remote wilderness beaches accessible only to the bravest of travelers, to the more easily accessible public parks popular with vacationers and families.

Tunnels Beach

Just a short walk from a busy parking lot, and you’ll lose the crowds hurrying to take on the popular Kalalau Trail. The views here extend toward the Na Pali coast, which turn gold at sunset. Bring your snorkel gear on calm days, and cash for the coconut stand in the parking lot.

Polihale State Park

Be prepared for a bumpy five-mile drive, but your reward will be a wind-swept, isolated and epic beach that’s a must for sunset. The Na Pali cliffs edge the sky in the distance.

Kalalau Beach

Accessible only by hiking the famed — and harrowing — Kalalau Trail for eight miles, Kalalau Beach is one memorable spot. Hikers bathe in a nearby waterfall, and the cliffs of Na Pali seem to hug you tightly.

Hanalei Bay

The crescent-shaped bay is home to several excellent beaches, each with views of the mountains and pristine stretches of sand.

Kalapaki Beach

The scene here is a hive of activity, and is perfect for people-watching or surf lessons.
