Top 5 / Europe

Romania is one of the least visited countries in Europe and, thus, hasn’t had much opportunity to develop its middling foodie scene. The capital city of Bucharest made some great strides in recent years and there are a few hidden gems every traveler should try.

Lente & Cafea
This fusion restaurant in the heart of Bucharest offers a delightful menu of chicken and fish cuisine and seating in its beautiful urban garden on sunny days. The relaxed atmosphere is perfect for those seeking a cozy reprieve from the city streets and the shelves here are lined with books for travelers who enjoy a little reading with their coffee.

Caru’ cu Bere
Caru’ cu Bere is an iconic staple of Bucharest cuisine and some of the finest dining available in the city. Opened in 1879, it offers delicious grilled dinners, soups and salads among an opulent setting fit for king. The vaulted ceilings and dark wood décor make it a perfect date night venue, but as one of the city’s oldest breweries it’s also perfect for a night out with friends.

Van Gogh Café
Van Gogh Café has one of the most extensive drink menus in Bucharest with a focus on healthy options like juice cleanses and coconut coffee. It’s the best place in town to come for a delicious, hearty breakfast. The salmon and cream cheese toastie is a favorite among locals and travelers that pass through.

Energiea
Another healthy option near downtown, Energiea has some of the best soups and smoothies in all of Romania. Seasonal fruits paired with light international fare make it a delightful option for a midday meal when you’re ready to refuel for the rest of the day. Since the restaurant and bar resides in an old printing house, you can still catch a whiff of the old paper that use to be produced here.

Vacamuuu
Vacamuuu is Bucharest’s most famous steakhouse thanks to an impressive and extensive menu of aged beef and steak sandwiches cooked to perfection. It’s basically every vegetarian’s nightmare and every meat lover’s paradise. The restaurant also houses a unique marketplace where you can purchase salami and cheese to take home to your friends.
