Top 5 / Europe

Situated off the Göta älv River on Sweden’s west coast is Gothenburg, a major city known for its Dutch-style canals, tree-lined boulevards, great shopping, beautiful coastlines and deliciously fresh seafood. There are many things to see and do in this gem of a city, but here are five things to get you started.

Feskekörka (The Fish Market)

Gothenburg is all about seafood, so to immerse yourself in the heart and soul of the city, eat like a local at the Fish Market. The market itself looks like a church, dating from 1874, and inside you’ll find a range of artisan fishmongers and restaurants where you can sample fresh delicacies and take away meals to enjoy along the adjacent canal.

Haga

In the west of the city, in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Gothenburg, is Haga, dating from the mid 17th century. Stroll through the cobblestone lanes lined with beautifully preserved timber houses and visit charming boutiques and cafés. Enjoy the world’s largest cinnamon buns at Café Husaren, stop at Bräutigam’s for handmade chocolates and visit the spa and restaurant at Haga Bathhouse.

The Museum of Art

Boasting three stars in the Michelin Green Guide to Scandinavia, the Gothenburg Museum of Art holds a unique collection of Nordic art, regarded as one of the finest collections in Northern Europe. Guests will find works by Carl Larsson, Edvard Munch, Picasso and Rembrandt, and right next door is the City Theatre and Concert Hall.

Liseberg Amusement Park

This Gothenburg institution offers rides, rollercoasters, concerts and an elaborate Christmas market in December. Enjoy 40 different attractions and rides such as AtmosFear, the tallest free-fall ride in Europe; the award-winning wooden coaster, Balder; and the Liseberg Big Wheel, which boasts magnificent views of the city.

Skansen Kronan

Built in 1697, this historic fortress was initially built to defend against the Danes, then served as a prison and private residences during the 19th century and was transformed into a military museum in the 20th century. There’s a summer café in the old army barracks, and from the hill on which the fortress stands, visitors can enjoy panoramic views over the city and harbor.
