Considering a summer getaway to Finland? Here are five destinations to add to your Finnish itinerary.
Sodankylä is located within the Arctic Circle. This means, during peak summer months, the sun doesn’t set at all. If you’ve been itching to visit the Arctic, but you don’t care so much for snow, ice and darkness, now is the time to go. But beyond the sunshine, this village also offers many outdoor adventures at two adjacent national parks.
For lots of events to choose from during your visit, travel to Turku, a waterside city offering multiple festivals throughout the summer, including Ruisrock Festival, a music fest in July. Ruisrock Festival features top internationally-recognized headliners such as Megan Thee Stallion and Major Lazer. The town also hosts the Down by the Laituri Festival, a rock festival, also held in July.
For a Finnish beach vacay, try Hanko, where you’ll find 20 miles of beach and 80 miles of coastline. Take in the lighthouse views, look out for seals and see why this destination is a popular and historic spa city.
Situated in the Finnish Lakeland region, Savonlinna offers lots of opportunities for paddling on its waters. However, if you’re more into culture than kayaking, you’ll find summer concerts and theatrical performances, as well as the July Savolinna Opera Festival.
Historic and charming, Porvoo was founded approximately eight centuries ago. Now you can see its historic structures, plus more modern art exhibitions, marketplaces and more. If you visit Finland in August, you can catch the SMAKU food festival.
