The Central American nation of Guatemala is blessed with a wide variety of landscapes, as well as both Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Here are five ways in which you can get out and experience nature.
Hiking
Guatemala is paradise for hikers, with plenty of volcanoes and mountains to explore. The most popular climbs are Pacaya and Acatenango volcanoes near Antigua, while Tajamulco in the north of the country is more challenging.
Sport Fishing
Both Pacific and Caribbean coasts offer great sport fishing in Guatemala. Head to Puerto Quetzal or Iztapa on the Pacific for sailfish, dorado and blue marlin, or fish for snook and tarpon in the Caribbean. The lakes of Peten are another good option for keen fishermen.
Whitewater Rafting
The Cahabon River is the best in the country for rafting, and various companies offer expeditions. Trips usually start from Guatemala City and head into remote areas not usually visited by backpackers.
Mountain Biking
Head to the highlands for excellent mountain biking, particularly around Quetzaltenango and Lake Atitlan. Antigua is also home to Maya Mountain Bike Tours and Old Town Outfitters, both of whom offer tours.
Surfing
The Pacific coast is a favorite with surfers. El Paredon and Iztapa are growing in popularity, but strong currents mean caution is advised for beginners.
