Nicaragua is an increasingly popular destination among backpackers and all different kinds of travelers. Here are some of the top destinations in the country.
Fly from Managua to Bluefields on the Caribbean coast and you will be able to visit gems such as Little Corn Island and Pearl Lagoon, home to amazing white-sand beaches and some incredible dive spots.
For a more active break, try the Pacific coast at Las Peñitas, a laid-back surf town near Leon. Alternatively, mix surfing and partying at the backpacker mecca of San Juan del Sur.
Another top spot is the Somoto Canyon, near the border with Honduras. Here you can hike, swim and canyon down a long ravine in one of the best adventure activities in the country. Afterwards, stop in at Miraflor National Park to hike the trails and spot some of the many species of birds that call the park home.
Next up are the volcanoes, and there are lots to choose from. Go to the island of Ometepe to climb Concepcion, or head to Masaya to peer down at the lava in its depths. Alternatively make the drive to Apoyo, where a crater lake makes for a spellbinding view.
