The Mexican city of Guanajuato has a long and interesting history told in a number of great museums. Perhaps the best one to visit is the Mummy Museum, which houses the mummified remains of people buried in a city cemetery. Due to the unique local conditions, they are incredibly well-preserved.
Another good choice is the Museo Casa Diego Rivera, the childhood home of Guanajuato’s most famous son. Celebrated muralist Diego Rivera grew up here and the museum enlightens visitors on his life and times.
Next up is the Museo Regional de Guanajuato Alhóndiga de Granaditas, a former granary that would play a pivotal role in the Mexican Revolutionary War. During the uprising, the Spanish barricaded themselves inside its strong walls, only to be massacred after a local hero burned down the wooden door.
Fans of Miguel de Cervantes and Don Quixote should visit the Museo Iconográfico del Quijote, a collection of 600 pieces of art inspired by the novel. Another good museum is the Bocamina de San Ramón, an old mine that you can visit to learn about the silver that made Guanajuato so wealthy.
There are plenty of great museums in the city, and you could easily spend a week there.
