Often overshadowed by its southern region and Machu Picchu, Northern Peru deserves some time in the spotlight.
A far-less-visited destination, northern Peru’s prices are lower so your money will go further than in Lima or Cusco. The sleepier, scenic region offers ancient ruins, tiny towns, lush landscape, no crowds and an overall more laidback atmosphere.
One of the area’s top must-sees is Kuelap, a hilltop fortress with ruins from the 6th-century Chachapoyas culture and the largest stone ruin site in the New World. Other wonders include Gocta Falls, the third-highest in the world, and the mountainside Revash Mausoleums in Chachapoyas.
The towns in Northern Peru are small, but offer great personality, food and history.
Mancora is primarily a surf village, with wonderful weather, lively nightlife, barefooted backpackers and beautiful beaches.
Cajamarca is a charming small town in the mountains famous for its cheese and chocolate. Tours are available from town for as little as $5 to nearby hot springs and archeological sites. For even more ancient ruins, including those of an ancient Chimor mud city and Moche Pyramids, visit the lovely colonial city of Trujillo.
Though not the most aesthetic city, Chiclayo is worth a visit for the Lord of Sipán collection, often called the King Tutankamon of the Americas.
In Piura, you’ll find some of the best food in Peru — for the best ceviche, visit La Casa Tejas.
