Tips / Safety

Traveling by train is one of the fastest and most exciting ways to tour Europe, not to mention one of the most affordable. It can also be dangerous if you’re not careful. Here are some tips to help keep you safe.

Stay With Your Backpack

Never let your backpack out of your sight when traveling on a train. Thieves would love the opportunity to steal yours when left unattended at a stop. When sleeping make sure a strap is wrapped around your body and the zippers are locked.

Choose a Busy Carriage

Thieves won’t steal when there are plenty of people in sight. Choose a carriage that’s packed to the brim over one with nobody else in sight. That way your stuff will be more secure thanks to watching eyes.

Know Your Exits

If something were to happen on the train, make sure to know your escape route. Fights break out and fires occur, so you need to know where to head in an emergency. Scope out the quickest exits and always have at least two in mind in case one is blocked.

Stay Sober

Most trains offer beverages to passengers, but do your best to steer clear of alcohol. You’re on a train full of rotating guests you don’t know, any of whom could take advantage of you if you aren’t in control of your own faculties.
