Where To Travel For Locavore Culture

Tips / Travel

Locavore culture is increasing in popularity. Travelers (and people in general) love consuming products produced close to home, with local ingredients, parts and people involved. Locavore culture often guarantees a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle, that’s typically economically sound. However, some destinations do locavore living better than others.

Unsurprisingly, according to an annual study produced by Strolling of the Heifers, a local foods organization, Vermont is the top locavore-friendly state in the country, followed by Maine and Oregon. The study ranks states by the number of farmers markets, community-supported agriculture programs, food hubs for regional farms, school districts with farm-to-school programs and Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food grants. The lowest ranking states? Nevada, Texas, Florida and Arizona.

When visiting Vermont, a few of the top local products include artisanal cheeses (the state houses more than 45 cheesemakers), chocolate, craft beer, cider and, of course, maple syrup.

You’ll want to check out the seafood scene in Maine, obviously, but also try the Maine Beer Trail or one of the state’s wineries.

While Oregon’s not particularly known countrywide for its food, the state churns out quite a lot to be proud of. Many of the items, including preserves, candies and more, can easily be packed away and brought home for future use. You’ll also find plenty of opportunities to enjoy farm stays in the state, with many happily hosting you. Visit Travel Oregon for inspiration for your next foodie trip.
