Destination

Washington’s Hood Canal cuts a deep gash between the Olympic and Kitsap peninsulas. Here, tides are conducive to growing shellfish, streams sport salmon populations and fertile river deltas are home to farms producing a range of produce. There are even local wineries and a distillery popping up in the area.

Among the best activities here for locavores are:

  1. Clamming, which can be done at a range of public beaches. All you need is a hoe and a bucket, and an understanding of the restrictions and seasons for doing so. More information is available here.

  1. Oyster eating and collecting: This can also be done at public beaches or simply head to Hama Hama Oyster Company, where you can eat just-shucked bivalves and learn more about the farming of shellfish.

  1. Eat a locally-focused meal at the Alderbrook Resort, whose gorgeous property opens out onto the Hood Canal. Chef Josh Delgado serves oysters and clams from the resort’s beach, as well as locally foraged and locally farmed ingredients.

  1. Sample local beer, wine and liquor at spots like Stottle Winery, Hardware Distillery, Mosquito Fleet Winery and more.
