Tips / Destination

Whether you’re backpacking or you just want to see several countries on your European vacation, train travel can get you around the continent quickly and cheaply. Here are a few things to keep in mind when planning your European train travel.

Buying Online Tickets Can Save Time and Confusion

If you’re in another country, where you don’t necessarily speak the language, it can be somewhat difficult to find out what you need in order to get where you need to go. Purchasing your tickets online ahead of time can ensure you have a spot on the train. Many have reservable seats just like an aircraft, so you won’t even need to worry about losing your spot during a free-for-all grab for a seat on a crowded train.

Know What Kind of Train You Want

Not all trains are alike. Does affordability matter more to you than comfort? Would you rather zip along to your destination, or are you okay with multiple stops in cities along the way? Research the kind of train you’re booking, so you get what you want, whether that’s free WiFi, a dining and bar car, more legroom or just the cheapest price possible.

Opt for Open Times If Your Schedule Isn’t Set in Stone

If you’re booking online, you don’t always necessarily have to book a set time to depart your destination. In fact, you can sometimes book open boarding passes that allow you to take a train at any time within a three-day period. If you foresee yourself feeling rushed and harried to get to the station on time while on vacation, this may be the right option for you.
