Traveling Solo in Norway

Tips / Destination

Traveling alone can be an intimidating prospect, but Norway is the perfect place to test your solo travel skills. The country is incredibly safe and easy to navigate, making it great for first-timers.

Norway is an expensive country to visit, so traveling solo will ease the financial burden a bit. It also makes it easier to squeeze into hostel rooms or mountain huts, where space is at a premium during busy summer seasons.

The country is also ideal for backpacking, as there is a vast network of hiking trails and backcountry huts — staffed and unstaffed — that provide refuge in the wilderness. This is a great way to meet fellow travelers as well as locals, who have a deep love for their country’s wild areas.

Norwegians don’t tend to be the most outgoing and friendly, but the mountain huts tend to bring out their national pride — you’ll find yourself surrounded by friends miles away from the nearest town.

You can also bring a tent and camp almost anywhere, thanks to Norway’s Right of Access laws; you simply have to set up a reasonable distance from a dwelling, and be a respectful visitor.

Norway also has a great public transportation system, a network of buses, trains and ferries that, in summer, allow you to get to remote areas. The Norwegians are always happy to help if you’re lost — as long as you’re willing to approach them first.
