Under $100 / North America

Edmonton, Alberta, is a beautiful part of Canada. It’s a hustling, bustling city with serene, green parks, located on the North Saskatchewan River. It’s also home to one of the largest remaining areas of American Elm trees in the world that are unaffected by the Dutch elm disease, a terrible affliction that ravaged a huge number of American Elm in northeastern America. It’s full of fun and culture, so here are a few things to check off your list if you’re on a budget.

Get breakfast at Mill Creek Café and Eatery, where you can get a hearty, tasty meal and a coffee for less than $15CAD.

Now that you’re fueled up for the day, head on over to the Telus World of Science Museum, located just northwest of the city center. There are loads to do here: laser shows, educational programs, an IMAX theatre and there’s always lots of different exhibits and events. Going here will set you back $36CAD per ticket per adult.

Your next destination is the West Edmonton Mall. It used to hold the claim to be the biggest mall in the world until 2004, but it’s definitely something you can’t pass up if you’re in Edmonton. There’s so much to do and see here, and as well as fitting in lunch, you can even squeeze in a game of bowling for $15CAD per person.

Edmonton has some fantastic dining venues, but none top the experience you’ll have at Dadeo’s, a New Orleans Diner & Bar. This bar is the birthplace of sweet potato fries and don’t leave without trying the Blackened Catfish Po’Boy, a delicious, Cajun-style sandwich that will set you back a mere $20CAD.

Alberta is known as being the cowboy province of Canada, so what better way to end the night and absorb the culture than by checking out The Ranch Roadhouse, a country bar with a mechanical bull you can ride. Don’t forget to wear a flannel shirt and cowboy boots, and if you can two-step then you’ll fit right in.
