North America

On the banks of the Rappahannock River sits one of Virginia´s most historic cities. Halfway between Washington, D.C., and Richmond, Fredericksburg is a delightful daytrip from its larger neighbors, offering abundant history and heaps of Southern hospitality.

A day in Fredericksburg should begin in Old Town where colonial apothecaries and taverns once medicated settlers during the Revolutionary War. Antiques aficionados will adore the quaint shops where relics from America’s history are available to peruse. Stop by one of the coffee shops for a caffeinated boost before setting off on your journey through history.

Four Civil War battles were fought in Fredericksburg and the grounds can be visited as part of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. History buffs will also enjoy visiting Ferry Farm where George Washington spent his childhood. For $5, visit the Rising Sun Tavern. Built by George Washington’s youngest brother, the once-tavern is now a museum and costumed re-enactors lead the tours.

You won’t find a more characteristically Southern menu than at Mason-Dixon Café and Baking Company. Advertised as a diner “where the North meets the South,” made-from-scratch entrées include chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits and jumbo lump crab cakes, each for less than $20.
