Japan’s capital city is at the forefront of technology, fashion and incredible cuisine. While notoriously expensive for tourists, you can stretch your yen to the fullest by indulging in these not-as-pricey alternatives to traditional tourism activities. In short, the more you act and live like a local, the less money you will spend.
First, start with a bowl of noodles or rice that will only set you back an average of $5. A lunch of the same basic staples increases slightly in price, ranging from $5 to $10. Once you’re properly carbo-loaded, take to the streets and lose yourself in Tokyo’s electric energy. Lights, colors and towering skyscrapers are an amateur photographer’s dream. Make a point to visit Shibuya crossing which is known to be the world’s busiest pedestrian crossing.
Among the museums and guided tours are a plethora of free attractions and sights. For example, the 7th-century Temple of Asakusa Kannon costs absolutely nothing and the streets that surround the temple offer no shortage of entertainment as locals try to barter for the best deals.
For more entertaining eye candy, head to one of Tokyo’s fish markets. Normally only open in the mornings, it is a sure bet you will see dozens of sea creatures you won’t find in your city’s local fish supply.
Stroll through one of Tokyo’s parks for a relaxing afternoon of people-watching among bonsai trees and gushing fountains. If you happen to visit in April, you’ll be delighted to find the pink cherry blossom trees in bloom.
Once the city starts to light up, take the elevator to the top floor of Tokyo City Hall for some of the city’s best urban views. On a clear day, you may even be able to see Mount Fuji.
